The head of the parliamentary group of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Besnik Tahiri, said at the solemn session of the Kosovo Assembly for the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence that it must never be forgotten that the country’s greatest historical value is the KLA war, which brought freedom and the declaration of independence in 2008.
According to Tahiri, what must now be achieved is national unity, membership in the Council of Europe, and NATO, so that Kosovo can once and for all complete an important chapter for its people.
“A people still being challenged for having fought for their freedom, facing unfair trials, have four names who are symbols of freedom, who are unjustly facing a process through which we are without any doubt certain they will be acquitted, because we believe in our just fight for freedom and in international justice. It must never be forgotten that the greatest historical value is the KLA war itself, which brought freedom, the declaration and recognition of Kosovo’s independence. What must now be realized is the full consolidation of our state within international organizations, the union of Kosovo with Albania, in the Council of Europe, in NATO, so that Kosovo can once and for all complete an important chapter for its people,” said Tahiri.
Tahiri addressed the younger generations with a message to understand that freedom and statehood came at a great sacrifice and with heavy losses.
“Today, as we celebrate the 18th birthday, I want to speak to the new generations, especially to those girls and boys for whom this period may not be part of their life memories. Many of them take the freedom we enjoy today for granted, thinking it was always meant to be, but no—it had to be fought for. Freedom and statehood must be understood by everyone as having come through great sacrifice, heavy loss, and the unwavering resilience of the generations of this country and nation,” said Tahiri.
