Presidency confirms dissolution of the Assembly

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, dissolved the Assembly of Kosovo on Thursday.

The news was announced by the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj. Later, a press release was also issued by the Presidency.

“In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo and the legislation in force, and following the Assembly of Kosovo’s decision today regarding the failure to form a government even by the second mandate holder, the President of the Republic of Kosovo has today dissolved the ninth Legislature of the Republic of Kosovo,” the statement reads.

The mandate holder from the Vetëvendosje Movement, Glauk Konjufca, failed on Wednesday to form a new government in the Assembly, even though he had assured President Vjosa Osmani that he would secure the numbers for the new executive.

After Konjufca was mandated as Prime Minister on November 4, the President had said that he had convinced her that he had a chance to secure the votes for the new government, even though he had not guaranteed the 61 signatures of deputies needed for this.

“LVV with candidate Konjufca, with whom I just finished the meeting, have full confidence that they can achieve the necessary votes, but that is up to them. It is up to them to secure the votes. My role is to be convinced that they have a chance, and they have convinced me that they do,” she said when asked by KosovaPress at a press conference on November 4.

However, in Thursday’s session, Konjufca received only 56 votes from deputies, out of the 61 needed to form a new government.

“With 56 votes in favor, 53 against, and four abstentions, the Assembly did not elect the Government of Kosovo,” said Assembly Speaker Basha.

LVV had also failed on October 26 to form a new government with the party leader Albin Kurti as mandate holder for Prime Minister.
