Obiliq marks Earth Day with several activities

On the occasion of Earth Day, the Municipality of Obiliq organized several activities for cleaning and making public spaces greener, as a sign of care for the environment, KosovaPress reports.

The day began with the planting of flowers at the main roundabout of the town, with the participation of some local students. The activities continued with the planting of pine trees in the yard of the “17 Shkurti” High School, followed by the planting of decorative urban trees in the yard of the Main Family Medicine Center (QKMF).

At the entrance of the town, near the Shkabaj roundabout, trees were also planted as part of a joint activity between the Municipality of Obiliq and Prishtina, which was attended by the mayors of both municipalities.

The Mayor of Obiliq, Xhafer Gashi, stated that one hundred trees mean one hundred new lives, given the environmental pollution in the town.

“Today we are here to plant one hundred trees—one hundred new lives—which means a lot for Obiliq, especially considering the town’s industry for energy production, the environmental pollution, and many other issues. However, this is an initiative launched by two directors through an agreement, and we hope that other departments will begin to implement their parts as well, as foreseen in the agreement. Inter-municipal cooperation is extremely important—it represents a unification of efforts and strength on any issue being addressed,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Prishtina, Përparim Rama, stated that as a result of inter-municipal cooperation, they are planting one hundred trees, and that both the capital and Obiliq will benefit.

“We are here today with Mayor Xhafer of Obiliq in an inter-municipal collaboration to plant one hundred trees for Earth Day. This is actually a process that stems from the major project Solar for Kosovo, where the entire initiative is geared toward benefit—mostly for the capital, but partly also for the municipality of Obiliq. We are very grateful because the land being used for ‘Solar for Kosovo’ is located in the territory of Obiliq, and as a result, we have planned several cooperation points, one of which is the tree planting we are doing today,” he said.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and now includes various events held globally.
