Kurti: We must wait for the full ruling of the Constitutional Court

The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the full ruling of the Constitutional Court must be awaited when asked whether he will respect the decision regarding the constitution of the Assembly.

“We must wait for the full ruling,” Kurti said after attending the ceremony marking the 26th anniversary of Kosovo Customs and the graduation of a new generation of customs officers.

The Constitutional Court published the announcement of the ruling on August 8, ordering the deputies to constitute the Assembly of Kosovo within 30 days.

The deadline starts once the full ruling is published in the Official Gazette, but this has not happened yet.

The Court stated that the Assembly Speaker must be elected by an open vote and that the vote can be held only up to three times.

This decision of the Constitutional Court has been criticized by the Vetëvendosje Movement—the party that won first place in the February 9 elections—but welcomed by the parties that had been in opposition until now.

Deputies ignored an earlier ruling by the Constitutional Court that had requested the constitution of the ninth legislature within 30 days. However, the court did not specify the consequences of not implementing that ruling.

Kosovo has entered a political crisis as it has not succeeded in forming new institutions since the parliamentary elections held on February 9.

The process has stalled on the vote for the Assembly Speaker, a position for which Vetëvendosje proposed Albulena Haxhiu, but she did not receive the necessary 61 votes.
