Kurti: Kosovo’s freedom stems from the Jashari family’s struggle

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that the freedom of Kosovo stems from the resistance and sacrifice of the Adem Jashari family, KosovaPress reports.

During the solemn session of the Assembly of Kosovo marking the 28th anniversary of the KLA Epic, Kurti said the gunfire of the Jasharis in Prekaz awakened the entire nation and made their sacrifice a national symbol.

The Prime Minister emphasized that, alongside being a day of honor, today is also a day of reflection on the path ahead for the country.

“Throughout the historical course of long political and social struggles for rights, equality, and dignity, the turning point in Prekaz clearly articulated the aspiration of the people of Kosovo for liberation from occupying Serbia. The KLA Epic became a call for mobilization, unity, and a clear articulation of our goal for statehood. The resistance of the Jashari family in Prekaz, and of all those who stood with and after them in the fight for liberation, constitutes a profound political, cultural, and national legacy from which Kosovo’s freedom originates, upon which our Republic was built. The gunfire in Prekaz spread far and reached the awareness of international diplomacy,” Kurti highlighted.

Kurti added that commemorating the KLA Epic is not only a day of honoring the fallen but also a moment to reflect on Kosovo’s journey and future.

“Alongside being a day of honor, today is also a day of reflection on the path we have traveled and what lies ahead. Today we are a state of a freedom-loving people who have always stood on the side of justice. We are a Republic of a society that builds its future on democracy and law, on human and civic freedoms, and on Western civilizational values. We honor the Jasharis’ sacrifice while strengthening the Republic every day through honest work and stable institutions. This is the best way to turn memory into responsibility and history into a guide,” Kurti said.

According to him, the figure of legendary commander Adem Jashari became a personification of determination not to submit, while the sacrifice of his family remains a lasting lesson on the price of freedom.

“As every March, we gather here to remember one of the highest acts in our national history, the KLA Epic. During those days of the confrontation between the will for freedom and the oppressive apparatus in Prekaz, history was written with fire and blood. The land became an altar of freedom, and one family became a national symbol. The figure of Commander Adem Jashari, inseparably linked to the fate of his family and comrades-in-arms, became a personification of determination not to accept submission. This sacrifice has been eternalized in our collective consciousness and memory as a permanent lesson that freedom comes at a high price, that it is an inalienable and just value,” Kurti emphasized.
