German teachers follow Kosovo’s example, go on strike demanding a €300 pay rise

Around 12,000 German teachers “copied” their Kosovar colleagues on Thursday by going on strike to demand a significant pay rise.

School teachers, university lecturers and other education sector workers took to the streets in five major cities, including Berlin, the teachers’ union GEW said, DPA reports, as carried by KosovaPress.

According to GEW, about 3,500 workers protested in Berlin, while 3,000 others demonstrated in Leipzig and 2,500 in Hamburg.

The unions are demanding a 7% pay increase, which amounts to about 300 euros per month.

Strikes are expected to continue until the third round of wage negotiations, scheduled to take place from February 11 to 13.
