In an atmosphere filled with emotions, memories, and gratitude, family, friends, and art enthusiasts gathered to honor the life and work of an artist who left a deep mark on Albanian music.
The tribute was for the vocalist of the group “Ilirët”, Shemsi Krasniqi, known to his loved ones and the wider public as Shemi.
At the commemorative gathering held today at the National Theater, amid the grief, Naser Gjinovci, the vocalist of the group “Minatori”, revealed the story of how his friend and colleague Krasniqi “developed” his characteristic voice.
“Whatever I say about Shemi is never enough. He was a personality, a man—or as we say, a ‘rare breed.’ One of Shemi’s identifying traits was his rough voice, which I called a voice with ‘a bit of fine gravel,’ something he got after having his tonsils removed. That was his great fortune because it gave him a unique identity in singing. A rough voice with a wonderful timbre and a high vocal range. Even to this day, this defined Shemi,” he said.
Shemi’s nephew, Kastriot Grajqevci, delivered a farewell message, describing him as a person who belonged not only to the family but to the people.
“Uncle, you weren’t just part of our family, you were the voice of the people. Today, as I read this message with a broken heart, I remember even more how much you touched this country and how much this country loved you. You knew how to carry the spirit of the people with your songs, giving voice to what unites us and never leaves us. And now, even though you are physically gone, what remains is something that never dies: your voice, your song, and your mark in our hearts. Shemi left us a legacy that time cannot erase because it was built with courage, dignity, and great love for his people,” he said.
Meanwhile, acting Minister of Culture Hajrulla Çeku, while offering condolences to the family and artistic community, called him an “icon of Albanian rock” and emphasized that his music touched society during a difficult time.
“We found Shemi in music, on television, in the city, and in our collective memory, now and in the future especially. His contribution, beyond the artistic, was also social. His activity with the group ‘Ilirët’ managed to unite all of us during the most difficult periods we experienced as a people during the 1980s and 1990s. Both avant-garde and patriotic, Shemi was an icon of Albanian rock. His absence will weigh heavily on all of us,” he said.
Shemsi Krasniqi – Shemi was found dead yesterday in his home, while the circumstances of his death have not been reported by the relevant authorities.
