On September 26, 1991, a referendum was held to declare Kosovo an independent state.

On this day, an absolute majority declared in favor of the independence of Kosovo. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo were confirmed, and were followed by the holding of the first democratic elections in 1992.

The referendum on the Independence of Kosovo was noted in all relevant international documents as a sublime act of the political will of the people of Kosovo.
