March 27 has been known as World Theater Day since 1962, as this day was initiated at the 9th World Congress of the International Theater Institute – INT of UNESCO in June 1961, at the proposal of Finland. This day is celebrated by about one hundred INT centers.
The INT International Theater Institute was founded in 1948 by UNESCO and is the most important non-governmental organization in the field of performing arts. INT insists on promoting the international exchange of knowledge, stimulating creativity and enhancing cooperation between theater people and mutual understanding in order to strengthen peace and friendship among nations.
