Kosovo waste package: Kurti says situation is serious

The acting Government has presented today a new package for the removal of illegal waste dumps across the country. During the presentation, concrete measures and institutional actions were announced for environmental protection, cleaning of public spaces, and addressing pollution caused by illegal landfills, reports KosovaPress.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti stressed that the waste situation has become serious, according to him, especially in areas that are not covered by any service.

“Waste collection requires institutional harmony and balance, which is not easy to achieve. Today we have a situation with serious shortcomings in the waste sector. We have prepared the new draft law on waste. The law is ready, but the Parliament is not yet. The waste situation has become serious, especially in areas that are not covered by anyone. We can freely say that we have an emergency,” Kurti emphasized.

He also stated that this package foresees the removal of around 500 illegal landfills.

“This action aims to achieve two effects: first, to intervene in places where waste removal poses a health risk. It also seeks to set a new path, where the government does not stand idle but leads the organization. For the action to be successful, five agreements with companies have been foreseen. The budget allocated by the Government is one million euros. The removal of around 500 illegal landfills is planned. We expect that during the implementation of the action we will have inspectors enforcing the current waste law,” Kurti added.

Acting Minister of this portfolio, Fitore Pacolli, stated that 1 million euros have been allocated for this package, covering landfill removal and areas outside settlement boundaries.
