This week should have been used to elect the president, says Kosovo’s Assembly Speaker

Speaker of the Assembly Albulena Haxhiu said that this week should have been used to reach a consensus on electing the President of Kosovo.

However, she said there is no reflection or willingness from opposition parties regarding the presidency.

After the meeting of the Assembly Presidency, she stressed that Kosovo does not need extraordinary elections.

“This whole week that we had ahead of us should have been used to reach a consensus to elect the president of the country for a five-year mandate. The country does not need extraordinary elections in the Republic of Kosovo. I also said yesterday that the current situation resembles last year’s situation, where despite meetings, there was no willingness, not even the minimum willingness, to come out of the deadlock or blockade created last year. Therefore, it is important that the parties reflect and take into account the message that the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo gave in the elections of 28 December. Whoever thinks that going to elections would change anything from this result is mistaken,” she said.

Haxhiu also said that the name of the opposition’s presidential candidate is still unknown.

“To this day, I do not know the name of the opposition or PDK and LDK candidate for president. If you know, tell me. But at least so far, neither from the meetings held by Prime Minister Kurti nor publicly have I heard that these two political parties have any name for president. Let them do so, let them propose presidential candidates, then we will address them, discuss and decide. But with the lack of willingness in meetings and the failure to propose any consensual candidate or someone outside political parties, I think they are harming the Republic of Kosovo. Or if they have decided so, then we cannot do anything about it,” she said.
