Long queues in Merdare, expats say, they have become commonplace

At the Merdare border point, long queues of cars have been created to leave Kosovo, mainly compatriots who are returning to their countries.

On the border with Serbia, the compatriots accuse the neighboring country for the long waits, however they say that these have become common and that it is not known if they are intentional due to the establishment of reciprocity for identity cards by the Kosovar side.

Citizen Valbon Suka, tells KosovaPress that he has been waiting for three and a half hours at this border point.

“We are here for about 3 and a half hours, I come from the municipality of Suhareka… quite a long time, I have three children with me”, he said.

The other citizen, Muhamet Bytyqi, who was returning to Germany after vacationing in his homeland, said that he has been waiting for over 1 hour in Merdare.

He said they do not know if the delays are being made on purpose by the Serbian authorities.

However, he said the decision on reciprocity is appropriate and said that it should not be postponed.

“It is a right decision, but they want to postpone it for 30 days. This is wrong, let the roads be blocked for a few days”, he said.

Long waits, according to expatriate Fatmir Visoka, have become common.

“I’ve been waiting here since 07:00, now I have to wait another 30-40 minutes, this is too much for the compatriots… It can be also that, but we have always waited”, he emphasized.

On Monday, the decision on reciprocity for identity cards entered into force. The same Serbian citizens who entered Kosovo will be provided with declaration forms for entering/exiting the territory of the country.
