LDK’s Azemi calls for the resignation of the ZRRE board: Electricity is being paid more expensive at night

A member of the Presidency of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Visar Azemi, following a study on electricity in Pristina and Ferizaj, said that 87 percent of electricity meters do not correspond with real time and higher tariff periods.

At a press conference, Azemi stated that Kosovo citizens have been misled by the Energy Regulatory Office (ZRRE) regarding evening electricity consumption, under the claim that energy and money are being saved.

“I noticed an anomaly in electricity meters and conducted a study of 900 meters, of which 87 percent turned out not to measure time properly—they measure it incorrectly. We are talking about a systematic deception. Samples from 884 meters, of which 87 percent were inaccurate, are not a coincidence. They do not correspond with real time on the meters. At the moment when ZRRE approves tariffs, we have summer and winter rates, lower and higher tariffs. We even had calls from Minister Rizvanolli to be careful with energy consumption and to use electricity at night, thinking we were saving energy and money. What has happened is that this entire system has resulted in a scheme that has penalized the citizens of the Republic,” Azemi said.

LDK is calling for an independent investigation and an audit of KESCO’s billing system to determine how much citizens have paid unlawfully.

Most importantly, according to Azemi, LDK is demanding the resignation of the ZRRE board, which he says has failed to implement its decisions and the billing code, and, above all, to protect citizens’ interests.

“KESCO appears to have misused the entire electricity billing system, and multimillion gains have gone to KESCO. Accountability must be demanded. It is clear that citizens have not abused the system, but KESCO—monitored by ZRRE, which is co-responsible in this deception—has. As LDK, we demand an independent, even forensic investigation and an audit of KESCO’s billing system to determine the scale of the damage and to inform citizens how much they have paid unlawfully in their bills. We demand the resignation of the ZRRE board for failing to implement their decisions, the billing code, and for failing to protect citizens’ interests. Citizens should seek compensation for the damages caused,” Azemi said.

Azemi also called on the Prosecution to investigate those responsible.
