Guerot: Political parties should find the right way to elect the president

The French Ambassador to Kosovo, Olivier Guerot, has stated that it is up to the political parties to find the appropriate way to elect the president.

He told KosovaPress that he views as a positive step the recent meetings between the ruling party, Lëvizja Vetëvendosje, and the two largest opposition parties, the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo, regarding the presidential election.

As the ambassador noted, the Constitution of Kosovo also makes it necessary for political parties to negotiate with one another.

“I think it is very good that the political parties are talking to each other. It is up to them to find a solution. The institutional framework of the Constitution of Kosovo makes it necessary for political parties to consult with one another. Of course, I do not want to comment on these discussions now because it is their matter to find the right way to elect the president,” said the French ambassador.

The French ambassador believes that political parties and institutions in Kosovo will calmly work toward electing the head of state.

“I am confident that political parties and institutions will calmly work to elect a president. We have excellent relations with all institutions, including the current president. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Kosovo’s institutions, which we have supported since 1999 and 2008, and it is a pleasure to see that now the institutions are firmly established,” he stated.

When asked about a consensual candidate for president, French Ambassador Olivier Guerot said he does not want to comment on domestic politics but is happy that the institutions are functioning.

“As a foreign diplomat, I do not want to comment on domestic politics. We have worked hard for Kosovo to become a sovereign state, and we are pleased to see that the institutions are now functioning calmly with one another,” he emphasized.

During this interview with KosovaPress, the French Ambassador to Kosovo, Olivier Guerot, expressed satisfaction that Kosovo has established its institutions after a year.

“We are very pleased that, after a year of hesitation, finally, the Assembly has been established according to the rules and the government has been formed. We were expecting this because we need partners for our economic activities here in Kosovo, as well as for the political and diplomatic process. France will also be more present in the economic field here. Last week, we had a French business day. We will also have the signing of foreign agreements with the French Development Agency, and for this, we need a government. So, we are very happy that a functional government can make commitments and the Assembly can ratify them,” Guerot said.

By March 4, 2026, the President of Kosovo must be elected in the Kosovo Assembly; otherwise, the country will go to early elections.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Kosovo has held meetings with the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, and the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, where the presidential issue was the topic of discussion.
