Failed to hold its electoral assembly within the deadline, CEC suspends political party AKR

The Central Election Commission (CEC) at its Thursday meeting suspended the political party New Kosovo Alliance (AKR). The party is required to hold its assembly within 45 days, otherwise the CEC will decide to deregister it from the register of political parties.

The director of the CEC Secretariat, Besnik Buzhala, said that AKR did not respect the deadline for holding its assembly and for this reason it must be suspended.

“Despite these notifications and reminders, the political party has not taken steps to fulfill this legal obligation. Therefore, considering that the political party AKR has not respected the deadline to organize and hold its assembly, the office recommends that the CEC suspend the political party AKR and oblige it to hold its assembly within an additional deadline of 45 days. If the registered political party does not hold its assembly within the additional 45-day deadline, the CEC will issue a decision to deregister it from the register of political parties,” Buzhala said.

In another item on the agenda, the CEC approved the work plan for 2026. The plan was prepared in accordance with the CEC Strategic Plan for the period 2023–2026 and based on the conclusions and recommendations derived from the 2025 election processes.

As reported by CEC member from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Arianit Elshani, the plan foresees the possibility of suspending its implementation in the event that early elections are announced.“A large part of these planned activities mainly depend on elections, but those that are legal obligations of the CEC will be fully completed,” Elshani said.
