Securing votes to make constitutional changes is expected to be this year’s challenge for the Government of North Macedonia. These changes are one of the criteria to continue the negotiations with the European Union, which were opened in July last year. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bujar Osmani, estimates that now is the time to start formal consultations with political parties and MPs, in order to achieve the necessary votes. He does not rule out the possibility of expanding the governing coalition, while adding that they want to cooperate with those who support the European path.
After opening negotiations with the European Union in the summer of last year, North Macedonia is now in the “screening” process, after the completion of which constitutional changes must be made, so that the second intergovernmental conference with the EU can be held.
The changes mean the inclusion of the Bulgarian community in the preamble of the constitution, for which Osmani says that they are not controversial and if those changes are not made, the consequences are serious for the country on the way to the EU.
