The US does not change its position on the Association, Hovenier: We do not want another “Republika Srpska”

The US Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, said that the United States of America has not changed its position regarding the Association, which he said should be in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, the decision of the Constitutional Court and that there should not be a “Republika Srpska”.

This is what he said after a conversation with students in Mitrovica, as he added that they do not want “something that has a negative impact on the functioning of the state of Kosovo”.

Hovenier stated that there are no new points to add regarding the position of the United States of America on the establishment of the Association.

After a conversation with students in Mitrovica, Hovenier told the media that only the Constitutional Court can decide on the constitutionality of the Association’s draft statute.

The US ambassador emphasized that the administrative instruction which enables the removal of mayors from the municipality, was a direct request of the European Union and the United States of America.

Further, he emphasized that they are waiting for the Government to work so that the citizens are guaranteed this democratic right.

Asked if there could be changes to the draft statute, Hovenier said that it is up to the EU special representative, Miroslav Lajcak.

He reiterated his stance on the aggression in Banjska of Zveçan, where he said that he condemns what happened.

The US ambassador told the media that they are still evaluating what happened on September 24.
