Osmani: Serbia and Russia a threat to Kosovo

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, emphasized today that Russia represents a threat to Europe, while Serbia represents a threat to the Western Balkans, accusing Belgrade of copying Moscow’s actions.

Before the start of the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, Osmani called on the European Union not to “reward Belgrade.”

She further stated that in the Western Balkans there is never a vacuum of influence.

According to Osmani, if there is no Western influence, then the malignant forces of the “triangle of evil” – Russia, China, and Iran – will always step in, not for charity, but with hostile strategic interests.

Therefore, she said, “it’s very important that enlargement is pushed forward and the Western Balkans, those countries of the Westerns that meet the criteria and that also work towards the values that the EU stands for, should be taken into account in moving forward.”

She also recalled that a few days ago Kosovo marked the second anniversary of the armed attack in Banjska, when a group of armed Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police, killing a sergeant.

Kosovo considers this attack a terrorist act and accuses the state of Serbia of organizing it.

According to her, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has been trying to copy Putin by “using aggression and destabilization tactics against neighbors, and for that reason, it is very, very important, that EU member states understand that rewarding Serbia for standing with Russia is not the way forward. Countries who are at a 100 percent alignment with the EU must be rewarded, not those who have chosen Moscow as their path,” she said.

Serbia maintains good relations with Russia and so far has refused to join the international community in sanctioning Moscow over its war against Ukraine. The EU has repeatedly called on Belgrade – which aims to join the European bloc – to align with Brussels’ foreign policy.

Denmark is the host of the seventh European Political Community Summit. The summit brings together 45 leaders, including the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
