KOSTT warns of power cuts; some neighborhoods without electricity for more than an hour

The Electricity Transmission, System and Market Operator (KOSTT) has announced that it is forced to apply power cuts due to overloads in the energy network. According to KOSTT, load restrictions have been imposed in order to maintain system safety.

As a result, several neighborhoods in the capital have been without electricity for more than one hour.

According to the announcement, during today (January 13) and tomorrow (January 14), KOSTT’s Control Area is operating with large and continuous imbalances, which at certain hours exceed 200 megawatts.

KOSTT stated that, in line with its responsibilities as system and market operator, it has undertaken all necessary actions to stabilize the system, including the activation of ancillary balancing services and the organization of intraday auctions. However, due to the significant discrepancy between declared nominations and actual consumption, these measures have not been sufficient to eliminate the resulting imbalances.

According to KOSTT, these deviations are negatively affecting the European interconnection network, increasing the risk to the stability of the power system and potentially leading to serious consequences, including punitive measures and the jeopardizing of the Connection Agreement with ENTSO-E.

Under these circumstances, in order to ensure the safe operation of the system and protect the integrity of the network, KOSTT emphasized that it will apply load limitations as necessary and in accordance with its legal and operational responsibilities.

The institution added that once the situation improves and system balancing is stabilized, the necessary actions will be taken immediately to restore normal operation.
