At the request of Bedri Shabani’s lawyer, Besnik Berisha, and with the approval of the trial panel, the public was temporarily excluded from the espionage hearing.
Meanwhile, the presiding judge, Rrahman Beqiri, after returning to the courtroom, contacted the Correctional Service in Gjilan, where it was confirmed that the accused, Shabani, had requested medical treatment on November 11.
He stated that they are currently waiting for an email confirmation regarding the health condition of Bedri Shabani.
“The court immediately contacted the Detention Center in Gjilan, requesting clarification via email regarding the health condition of the accused Bedri Shabani. We promptly received a response from the center’s doctor, Ngadhnjim Rexhepi, confirming that on 11.11.2025 the defendant Bedri Shabani had reported for a consultation with the prison doctor, where he was examined for the complaints stated in his request. He was recommended therapy and consultations with relevant specialists.
Since this response was somewhat incomplete, the court again contacted the relevant prison unit by phone to inquire whether he had been examined today. According to the phone response, the accused Shabani was indeed examined today by the prison doctor, and his vital signs were within normal values. However, the court requested that this information also be provided in writing, and we are awaiting that response for documentation purposes,” he said.
When asked by the presiding judge, Rrahman Beqiri, about his health condition, the accused Bedri Shabani said he had health concerns and requested that today’s session be postponed.
“I have many health concerns and humanely request that the session be postponed. The therapy I’m taking is heavy… I’ve taken it and feel dizzy,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bedri Shabani’s lawyer, Besnik Berisha, requested that this part of the session be held without public presence, since it concerns health issues.
“Since these are health-related matters, I kindly request that this part be held without public access. I feel sorry for my client,” he said.
On the other hand, the case prosecutor, Bekim Kodraliu, said he did not understand the reason for excluding the public from the court session. However, he said that the matter should be left to the court’s discretion.
“I don’t understand why the public should be excluded. We are jurists, not doctors. Nevertheless, I believe that the right to medical treatment should be respected, but I don’t think we should go into the details of the patient’s health problems at this stage, as we are still waiting for the report. I leave it to the discretion of the court whether to exclude the public,” he said.
Muharrem Qerimi’s lawyer, Betim Shala, also agreed that this part of the session should be closed to the public.
After that, the presiding judge, Rrahman Beqiri, approved lawyer Besnik Berisha’s request.
“The trial panel, upon the proposal of lawyer Besnik Berisha, issues a ruling approving the request of lawyer Besnik Berisha, thus temporarily excluding the public from this criminal case, but only for the part concerning the statement about the health condition of his client,” he said.
The Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo (SPRK), on February 19, 2025, filed an indictment against Bedri Shabani and Muharrem Qerimi for the criminal offense of ‘Espionage’, reports KosovaPress.
The two are suspected of having provided information to the Serbian Intelligence Agency (BIA) about the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), war massacres in Kosovo, the Kosovo Intelligence Agency, the Kosovo Police, and the Police Inspectorate of Kosovo.
In 2024, two persons — Bedri Shabani and Muharrem Qerimi — were arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Serbia’s BIA. Their arrest was made possible following the discovery by the Kosovo Intelligence Agency (AKI).
