Albanological Institute screens film on migration in Kërçova

The Institute of Albanology of Kosovo, within the framework of the “Albanological Lectures” program, has screened the film “Gurbeqars: the non migrants”. A short film within the field of migration, which presents the complex migration processes in the Kërçova region and beyond.

The idea of this short film, its creator, Professor Lumije Jusufi, said, was to look at language contacts and the influence of migrants.

“External factors are always linked to cultural or social changes, but all language contacts have been the approach I had in this project. I see language contacts as external developments, with cultural and social change. The idea was to look at language contacts not only of migration, which is natural, but also the impact they bring, these migrants, through a specific type of migration,” said Jusufi.

Jusufi said that every term used for migrants was criticized.

The name of the project “gurbetqars” remained from the way migrants are called in Kërçova.

“During the project, which was not only in Kërçova, but in the entire Albanian sphere, to prepare the questionnaire how to call these people. Gurbetqarë was criticized, migrant, mërgimtarë was criticized, every term I chose was criticized. I grew up in Kërçova and with that gurbetqarë without reflecting on the term we use, and there the idea was born,” she said.
