The 47th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, who has returned to the White House, during his first term mediated the signing of an agreement for the normalization of economic relations between Kosovo and Serbia, on September 4, 2020. While his impact on Kosovo’s economic processes is expected to be seen aslo in the mandate he took on January 20 of this year.
Economics experts in Kosovo have different opinions regarding Trump’s impact on Kosovo’s economic processes.
Economics professor Ilir Hajdini is optimistic that the 2020 agreement can be reactivated, but here he says that “the approach of the future government in Kosovo towards the US will also have an impact”.
He believes that if Kosovo has a cooperative and argumentative government with professional people, it will be possible to convince those appointed in the Trump Administration of a positive impact on Kosovo.
“There will be impacts, but it depends on how we approach the US, it depends on who will be in the next government in Kosovo. If we have a cooperative and argumentative government with professional people who will manage to convince the elected officials of the administration, how to act in relation to Kosovo. Then we have a chance that this impact, which could be negative, can be transformed into a positive impact. It all depends on how we will govern and how much we understand the global American approach. They can also bring back the issue of the negotiations that Kosovo had with Serbia under the Trump administration four years ago. And they usually have an economic approach to solving problems, so they might push us to reach other agreements for the development of infrastructure with surrounding countries, especially with Serbia, which if this happens, we would benefit”, says Hajdini.
