The Kosova Police is expected to toughen the measures against the violators of traffic violators, after the loss of the lives of three young people on the “Ibrahim Rugova” highway, as a result of the organization of illegal speed races. For this case, the police initiated disciplinary measures against negligent police officers, whereas the commander of the traffic unit in Prizren and the police officer for traffic safety on the highways were removed from their positions.
This was announced on Wednesday at the joint press conference of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, and the director of the police, Gazmend Hoxha.
Minister Sveçla said that the police had twice prevented the organization of illegal speed races, whereas the people who caused the accident had successive fines from the police.
He announced that 104 citizens lost their lives in traffic accidents this year alone.
In addition, Sveçla said that legal changes are being made for road traffic rules, where there will be a tightening of measures against traffic rule violators, a doubling of the value of monetary fines, a doubling of the time limits for the confiscation of drivers’ licenses and of negative points.
On the other hand, the director of the Kosova Police, Gazmend Hoxha, said that after the recent cases of fatal accidents, all police units have been mobilized.
He said that until now they have prevented 50 illegal vehicle races and have imposed 193 fines.
He said that during this year there is a 7.58 percent increase in accidents in total, while he mentioned the reasons why the same are happening.
