The Hungarian presidency – the government expects Kosovo’s EU application to be reviewed, the opposition and experts are skeptical

The ruling party, Levizja Vetëvendosje, expects that during the leadership of the Presidency of the European Union by Hungary, there will be positive movements in terms of obtaining the status of a candidate country for membership in the EU which has been sitting on the shelves of the EU for more than a year and a half. However, the opposition and those familiar with European integration are skeptical about such a thing.

The MP of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Driton Hyseni, tells KosovaPress that he expects Hungary to have a proactive and positive role in reviewing the application for obtaining the status of a candidate country for Kosovo.

He is optimistic that during the Hungarian presidency the punitive measures against Kosovo will be completely removed.

However, PDK MP Ferat Shala is skeptical about such a thing.

According to him, obstacles to EU membership are the five countries that do not recognize Kosovo, as well as the non-implementation of dialogue agreements.

He demands that in the second half of this year the punitive measures against Kosovo be removed.

On the other hand, the former Kosovar diplomat, Blerim Canaj, declares that the review of the application for Kosovo’s membership in the Hungarian presidency will be difficult due to the pro-Vucic approach of the prime minister, Viktor Orban.

Hungary took the presidency of the EU Council on July 1, 2024, and will hold it until December 31. From January 1, the next presidency will be chaired by Poland.

Kosovo applied for EU membership in December 2022.
