February 14 is known as Valentine’s Day where, in addition to love, this day is also made special by the gifts that partners exchange with each other.
Flowers, various jewelry, chocolates, postcards are some of the gifts that the citizens of Kosovo like to give to their loved ones on the occasion of February 14.
Valentine’s Day or otherwise known as Saint Valentine is named after a famous saint, but there are many stories as to who he was.
Some citizens in Prishtina have expressed that they celebrate Saint Valentine – the day of lovers. Perparim from Shkodra, emphasizes that he celebrates Valentine’s Day, since according to him it is the most beautiful thing for love.
But another elderly citizen, Ukë Rrustemaj, says that he has celebrated Valentine’s Day before.
Meanwhile, Lorik also expressed that he prefers to give love every day, and not just one day to be special.
Valentine’s Day is a very old tradition, and is believed to have originated from a Roman festival.
This day is believed to be named after a priest from Rome named Valentine. During this period, Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought that married men were weak soldiers. But Valentine believed that this rule was unfair and chose to marry the couples secretly. When Claudius found out, he imprisoned Valentine, condemning him to life. In prison, Valentine fell in love with the prison guard’s daughter, and when he was sent to be shot on February 14, he sent the girl he loved a letter signed “From your Valentine”!
