On December 10, 1901, the Nobel Prizes were awarded for the first time. After lengthy negotiations, partly with the French government which sought to impose a very high tax on Alfred Nobel’s wealth and partly after talks with the Nobel family over the issue of inheritance, it finally became possible to grant for the first time 5 awards, as much as the Nobel had left by will.
The ceremony for four prizes, in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, took place in Stockholm and the Peace Prize ceremony was held in Christiania, the Norwegian capital that would later be renamed Oslo.
