Citizens complain about “inflating” electricity bills, KEDS denies it

Since October of this year, citizens have been complaining that their electricity bills are more “inflated” than usual. They even say that this month there is a 40 percent change in the price of the bill, compared to the previous months. As a reason for this, they said that “we are paying for the north”. Meanwhile, the Kosovar Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) denies such a thing, while saying that the retail tariffs that are in force were set during the month of April 2023 and that there is no other movement in electricity prices. They add that the use of electricity for heating during the last months may be the reason why some citizens may have received more “inflated” bills than previous months.

That energy tariffs have not increased and remain the same since April is also confirmed by the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO).

Citizen Bajram Nura says that in recent months his energy bill has been 40 percent higher, while he emphasized that a solution should be made to this issue.

Likewise, Ramadan Bulliqi says that he has noticed an increase in electricity tariffs, for which he says that he does not know where the problem lies, whether they have spent more or there is an increase in tariffs.

In addition, he also complains about unannounced power cuts.

Also, another citizen says that the electricity bill has been expensive for this month, for which he says that something is not right, because according to him the prices should be decreased and not increased.

Meanwhile, a citizen points out that there is a lack of good management, for which he adds that “the people is always a victim”.

Meanwhile, from KEDS they say that since April there has been no other movement in electricity prices.

They emphasize that billing is done on an individual basis for each customer and depends on the consumption made during the period of one month, divided into day and night rates, up to 800 kH and over 800 kH.

Through a written response from KEDS, they emphasize that the cause of these complaints may be that citizens spend more electricity during the winter season for heating.

Likewise, the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) says that electricity tariffs are the same from April 1, 2023 and continue to be the same.

In addition to the numerous complaints of citizens and some opposition parties about the high electricity bills for the month of December, the Council for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms has also reacted.

CDHRF (Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms) has called these bills abnormal, as it has requested an urgent investigation by the State Prosecutor’s Office.
