Ambassador Ajeti: Kosovars in Germany will no longer be registered as Serbian citizens

The Ambassador of Kosovo to Germany, Faruk Ajeti, has announced that fellow citizens who have been registered as citizens of Serbia in German cities so far can now change this. In a video message, Ambassador Ajeti emphasized that emigrants should approach the competent German authorities and request that, as he put it, the citizenship of Serbia be removed once and for all from the citizenship category.

Ambassador Faruk Ajeti stated that this change comes as a result of a circular from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior.

“Dear fellow citizens, for more than 17 years, hundreds of thousands of citizens of the Republic of Kosovo have been automatically registered in various municipalities in Germany, unjustly and incorrectly, as citizens of Serbia. Now, I am pleased to inform you that as a result of our diplomatic work and efforts, this long-standing unresolved issue, inherited over the years, will end today. Following our continuous efforts and numerous communications with German institutions, including the Federal Chancellor, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and the Federal Ministry of Justice, we have requested that citizens of Kosovo be registered only as citizens of Kosovo and not as Serbian citizens. Not only 16 German federal states, but over 5,200 civil registration centers across Germany have already received a circular from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, notifying them of this important change for the citizens of Kosovo,” emphasized Ambassador Ajeti in a video message published on Facebook.

Ambassador Ajeti has invited Kosovo citizens affected by this issue to approach the German authorities or to contact the Embassy of Kosovo in Germany.

“They will henceforth be registered only as citizens of the Republic of Kosovo. Therefore, we urge all our citizens residing in Germany who are affected by this phenomenon to approach the competent German authorities in the city or town where they live to correct their documentation. What should they do? They should request that the citizenship of Serbia be removed once and for all from the citizenship category in the relevant documents. For additional information, we kindly ask the citizens of Kosovo to contact our Embassy in Berlin or the nearest consular mission in Germany. Expressing deep regret for this issue inherited from 1999, which has affected many of you, we thank the friendly German state for eliminating this important issue for our state identity,” Ajeti emphasized.

This step marks an important achievement for the citizens of Kosovo in Germany, ensuring fair treatment and full recognition of Kosovo’s citizenship.
