Up to 10% of polling stations will be recounted by the Central Election Commission (CEC) during the next elections, whenever they are held, in order to ensure that vote counters have accurately recorded the results of the ballot papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This control mechanism was urgently approved yesterday by the Central Election Commission, two days before the end of the constitutional deadline for the election of the President of Kosovo, the failure of which will lead the country to extraordinary elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the last parliamentary elections held on 28 December, the electoral process faced irregularities in the counting of votes for parliamentary candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CEC spokesperson Valmir Elezi said for KosovaPress that the mechanism of control of the counting of votes for parliamentary candidates has been designed to address the problems identified in the Municipal Counting Centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo address the problems identified in the Municipal Counting Centres during the counting of votes for parliamentary candidates, the Central Election Commission has undertaken concrete measures through the improvement of the regulatory framework. In sub-legal acts it has been foreseen an additional mechanism of control of the process of counting of ballot papers. Specifically, it is foreseen that after the receipt of electoral materials from regular polling stations at the Counting and Results Centre, the CEC assesses the situation and, if necessary, may decide on the recounting of up to 10% of polling stations selected randomly,\u201d<\/em> said Elezi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Elezi, the provision of recounting of a certain percentage of polling stations aims to increase the care of the CEC in the results of elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As he pointed out, the damage to the credibility of the early parliamentary elections of 28 December has made such a mechanism necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The CEC spokesperson, Valmir Elezi, clarified that the mechanism for the counting of 10% of polling stations is already in force and will be implemented in the next electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the last parliamentary elections, the CEC had identified several cases of not accurate recording of votes for parliamentary candidates and these suspicions led to the decision for the recounting of 2,557 polling stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the recounting that was done with the aim of correcting the results, thousands of votes were removed from certain candidates and thousands of others were added to other candidates, which were not correctly recorded in the Municipal Counting Centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, a large number of commissioners and other officials were also interviewed and detained by the relevant authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Up to 10% of polling stations will be recounted by the Central Election Commission (CEC) during the next elections, whenever they are held, in order to ensure that vote counters have accurately recorded the results of the ballot papers.
