The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, rejected the offer for co-governance, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Monday\u2019s meeting on the election of the president, Kurti stated that Abdixhiku also rejected a second offer for LDK to take the position of Speaker of Parliament. Consequently, according to Kurti, the country is heading toward new elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asked about the next steps for electing the head of state, with only nine days left under the constitutional deadline, Kurti said he had sent a message to Bedri Hamza for a meeting, but stressed that the offer for co-governance and the Speaker\u2019s post was exclusively for LDK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInitially, we offered LDK, in co-governance with the Vet\u00ebvendosje Movement and our other partners in the 66-seat majority, the position of deputy prime minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and three other ministries. I preferred that Mr. Abdixhiku become my deputy, so that we could begin a new chapter of cooperation with LDK. You know I had written a letter to him saying it is better to form the coalition now rather than later. It did not happen then, nor now, and that is regrettable. In this way, Kosovo is heading toward entirely unnecessary new elections\u2026 We cannot form co-governance or cooperation against the will of the people and the election results,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to him, besides rejecting co-governance, the LDK leader also turned down the offer for his party to take the post of Speaker of Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt should not have been necessary to reject our offer for co-governance. After it was rejected, with the explanation that Vet\u00ebvendosje should not hold all three top state positions, we made another offer to LDK. That was for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be swapped. One of LDK\u2019s representatives would become Speaker of Parliament, while the current Speaker would move to Deputy Speaker, where LDK currently holds a position. LDK would lead the legislature, while for our candidate, Glauk Konjufca, we did not request a vote from LDK. They could vote as they wish,\u201d<\/em> Kurti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked why Vet\u00ebvendosje insists on holding the presidency, Kurti said Abdixhiku had not presented any candidate in their meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to him, LDK, with 15 MPs, does not have the right to demand the presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey were not interested because they said they do not have the numbers. But if there was any idea for a consensual figure, they should have told me\u2014someone outside political parties. In this sense, we are not insisting on holding all three positions. As you saw from the second offer, we proposed swapping positions between LDK and Vet\u00ebvendosje. But this was not accepted. It can no longer be said that Vet\u00ebvendosje wants all three positions\u2026 I cannot offer something they themselves said they are not seeking. There are basic rules in negotiations. LDK, with 15 MPs from the last elections, does not believe it has the right to demand the presidency,\u201d <\/em>Kurti emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Following the failure to reach an agreement with LDK, Kurti said he sent a message to Bedri Hamza for a meeting, but did not specify whether a formal invitation was sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “PDK is one-third of the majority. Meanwhile, they asked me for a blank political agreement without offering any names, proposing that they would put forward two candidates and we would secure the signatures and vote for one of them\u2026 Just after finishing the meeting and before coming here, I sent a message to Bedri Hamza, and we will see what is possible going forward.
