At that time, she had little information about the situation and did not even know where to take her for treatment.

“Until Arta was two years old, we didn’t notice anything. When she turned two, we realized she could hear, even when she was outside and I called her, we knew she could hear. My husband was in Germany at that time, and with her father, I took her to a doctor through the newspaper for children who do not speak. I took her, and the doctor told me ‘she won’t speak for four years,’ and for four years she didn’t say a single word. The situation worsened because the war started in Drenas, then Prekaz and other places. When the war ended, we came here to Pristina because everything had been removed from the apartment. I took her to the speech therapist at the hospital for six months, twice a week. He told me to send her to the special school ‘Përparimi’. I sent her for three years, because at first there was no transportation. After three years, the bus came, picked her up, and took her to school.”

Mother Nurije keeps her eyes always on Arta, afraid that someone might take advantage of her.

“It has been very hard because I was worried since she is a girl, and I worried about my son too, but a son is different, a daughter is different. Her difficulties in speaking prevent her from working, as Nurije explains.

“In Dardania, markets and shops are very close. Arta showed extraordinary football talent.”

Her success came entirely by chance, her mother says, adding that she never had the opportunity to enroll her in more activities. For these children, there is nothing from the state, nothing at all. Every parent wants their children to be educated and employed.
