In an extraordinary meeting attended by 109 out of a total of 120 MPs,\nthe Assembly of Kosovo unanimously declared Kosovo an independent, sovereign\nand democratic state.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The legality of Kosovo&#8217;s Declaration of\nIndependence has been a controversial topic for some time. Serbia opposing the\nDeclaration of Independence of Kosovo sought evaluation of the international\nvalidity and support for its position, allegedly that the Declaration of\nIndependence of Kosovo was illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this development, in October 2008, Serbia requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice.
