The United States of America think that the recent developments regarding the relations between Kosovo and Serbia are concerning and put at risk the important progress achieved in the dialogue facilitated by the EU, a spokesperson of the American Embassy in Pristina told KosovaPress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the United States joins\nthe EU in calling on representatives of Serbia and Kosovo Serbs to respect\ntheir dialogue obligations and return to Kosovo institutions to fulfill their\nduties, including the police, judiciary and local administrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American spokesman in Pristina has also\nannounced that for the USA it is the responsibility of both sides to guarantee\npeace and stability on the ground. He emphasized that the United States once\nagain requests the postponement of the implementation of the decision on\nlicense plates and the formation of the association of municipalities with a\nSerbian majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Actions, such as burning cars or\nintimidating rhetoric, are unacceptable and will prompt an appropriate response\nfrom the international community… All parties involved must take steps to\nreduce tensions and ensure peace and stability in ground. Actions and rhetoric\nthat increase the possibility of violence put innocent lives and those of\ninternational peacekeeping forces on the ground at unnecessary risk,” he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding recent developments in relations\nbetween Kosovo and Serbia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States agrees with the European\nUnion that the recent developments around relations between Kosovo and Serbia\nare of great concern and put important progress achieved in the EU-facilitated\nDialogue at risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kosovan Serbs’ withdrawal from Kosovan\ninstitutions is not a solution to the current disputes and has the potential to\nfurther escalate the tensions on the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All involved must take steps to reduce\ntensions and ensure peace and stability on the ground.  Actions and rhetoric that increase the\npossibility of violence place innocent lives and those of international\npeacekeeping forces on the ground at unnecessary risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States therefore joins the EU in\ncalling on Serbia and Kosovan Serb representatives to respect their Dialogue\nobligations and return to the Kosovo institutions to fulfill their duties,\nincluding in the Police, Judiciary and local administrations.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, we again join the EU in\nurging Kosovan authorities to respect their own obligations without delay.  This means immediately extending the process\nof re-registration of vehicles and suspending any punitive action against KM\nplate holders until the license plates issue can be resolved by the parties\nunder the Dialogue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also means immediately starting\nnegotiations to establish the Association of Serb Majority Municipalities\n(ASM).  The Kosovo Assembly has ratified\nthe Brussels Agreement and Kosovo\u2019s Constitutional Court ruled that the ASM\nneeds to be established, which makes establishing the ASM a binding legal\nobligation for Kosovo.  Continued failure\nby Kosovo to implement this obligation undermines the principle of rule of law\nand damages Kosovo\u2019s reputation and credibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding our message to Kosovan and\nSerbian leadership;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the responsibility of both parties to\nensure peace and stability on the ground. \nActions, such as burning of cars or intimidating rhetoric, are\nunacceptable and will prompt an appropriate reaction by the international\ncommunity.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We urge them to choose the path of dialogue\nand refrain from actions that would lead to violence and confrontation. The\nUnited States fully supports EU efforts to continue to facilitate\nnegotiations.  Both Kosovo and Serbia\nneed to show they are ready to seek solutions in a constructive manner and\nrespect their obligations made in the EU-facilitated Dialogue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
