ABC News will pay Donald Trump $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit the US president-elect filed against the network and host George Stephanopoulos in March.
The settlement, which was filed in the Miami Division of the Southern District of Florida on Saturday, says ABC will make a $15 million contribution to a "presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for the plaintiff" and pay a million dollars in Trump's attorney's fees.
As part of the settlement, the defendants were ordered to issue a statement of "regret" in a memo for a March 10 segment on Stephanopoulos' "This Week" program in which false claims were made that Trump had been held civilly liable for rape. by writer Elizabeth Jean Carroll.
An ABC News spokesperson told the Washington Post that it is "pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court filing."
Trump sued Stephanopoulos and ABC for defamation on March 18 after the host claimed during an interview with South Carolina Republican Nancy Mace that Trump had been found "liable for rape" — a misstatement of the rulings in Carroll's two lawsuits against him.
