The authorities in Shengjin said that the situation with fires is improving. The prefecture of Lezha announced that during the night, several fires that erupted on Saturday afternoon were extinguished.

"For today, all the means of Fire Protection that were present the day before will operate, as well as 300 members of the Armed Forces and about 100 municipal forces. There is an operation on the ground to put out any burning fire [burning logs]", says the Lezha Prefecture announcement.

A day ago, in Shengjin, the situation worsened as the flames engulfed a tourist complex in the area known as 'Rana e Hedhun'. The fire reached the coast.

In addition to the firefighting forces, the Cougar helicopter of the Ministry of Defense of Albania and two Canadair planes from Italy, as part of the support from the European Civil Protection Mechanism, were also deployed to extinguish the flames.

The Minister of the Interior, still in office, Taulant Balla, was in Shengjin on the evening of July 30, from where he said that additional help is being sought from abroad to control the fire situation.

"We are in contact with [NATO mission in Kosovo] KFOR to receive their helicopters. All our work is impossible to give the result we want. The most difficult situation is in 'Rana e Hedhun'. But I am also worried about the crown in the city, in the church. It is a crown planted with pine trees, and the pine tree is like an explosive device," said Balla.

He also said that there is no evidence that the fire explosion was intentional.

Albania has about 147 firefighting vehicles and 1.300 officers and two Cougar helicopters, which, according to the authorities, are insufficient to cope with the situation created by fires during the summer/.REL
