"Super-Election Year: Redefining the Global Landscape" was the next topic within the Kosovo Summit for Peace and Democracy, which highlighted the possible impacts of the presidential elections in the United States on global politics and transatlantic relations.
The Head of the Office in Sofia at the European Council for Foreign Relations, Maria Simeonova while providing an analysis of the profile of the candidates for the presidential elections Donald Trump and Kamala Harris said that the latter is the candidate that from a financial point of view will be more news good for Europe.
"When I focus on the profiles of the two candidates Trump and Harris, and it's just going to start with the assumptions that I made now and I'm going to try to give a different angle than what Marco said. So we have the Trump that we know, and we have experienced and kind of... What I'm trying to say is that based on his first term, we can draw some conclusions about the type of his reflexes, and that's going to be very important, and that's why I say this when I hear Trump, and I think about foreign policy and the transatlantic relationship, I think about short-term policies, short-term decisions, and I think about business deals, so that's what we can say based on his first term, that he will follow some quick decisions and neglect perhaps deeper problems, especially for our region, and this is not good news for our region, especially for the time we are living in. When we talk about Harris, we don't have a very clear picture yet. I mean, even in the debate and everything we know right now is pretty vague to an extent. But what we can expect is continuity, and at least we can hold on to the transatlantic relationship, and for Europe it will be very important to have someone in the White House who will engage with European security, with the continued engagement of the US on the continent and especially in Ukraine, and this will be important given the tough negotiations within the EU on the next Multiannual Financial Framework. So Harris is the candidate that financially will be better news for Europe," she said.
Senior Advisor at the ISAC Fund, Marko Savkovic has shared an analysis on the differences between the candidates in the upcoming US elections, underlining that the main priorities for citizens are the economy and health.
"I was looking this morning at this great compilation of data from the think tank about how the two candidates are doing so far and where the differences are. And also what are the priorities for citizens, and the economy and health certainly lead the way not just foreign policy .where the differences are big as they are on violent crime, on immigration, on abortion, on all of these very controversial issues, and the two policies are only further apart over the last three or four years, of course, since the last presidential election, I mean especially over the last three years, immigration for Trump supporters has almost doubled as a priority, and so has abortion for Harris supporters , which is perfectly understandable, of course, to anyone who has been following developments in the US recently... What when asked who can bring the country's citizens closer to five to seven percent, most answer Harris, but when asked who would better manage the economy, citizens also answer with a five to seven percent Trump majority, which is also very interesting. What does that mean, I think and someone said, I think it was Milica, on the issue of trade and tariffs it's only with China, there are concerns about the issue of trade tariffs with the EU as well as not going into great detail that would really jeopardize the global economy as we know it today. But this comes from the growing demand of citizens worried about the loss of rhythm and the reduction of the quality of life", he said.
Senior Policy Officer at EPLO, Lorenzo Conti stated that the European Union has developed a number of instruments to be more active in the military aspect. He hopes that after discussions on the defense industry, the EU will once again focus on peace building.
"With a new commission we will talk about defense which until now has been taboo for the EU. There will be a defense commissioner, although I think he would focus mostly on the growth of industry and not on defense from a more holistic or strategic point of view, over the years the EU has developed a series of instruments to be more active both on the military side.On the other hand, I can mention the European peace capability, which is basically a sufficient budgetary instrument for it provided lethal weapons to third countries. Then it was used in the context of Ukraine, but not in the way originally planned, but that's a long story, we can get into that later if necessary just from an anecdotal point of view. So the EAS has always had a department that focuses on mediation and prevention of peace building, recently this department has joined the defense partnerships. So the same person is looking at the two elements, the people who are part of the mediation unit are 6, and the oldest is 45 years old. So they are all like junior officers not very influential within the EAS. So they are basically doing their advocacy to the rest of the house. Next month there will be a major event in Brussels on mediation, which will bring together the most important NGOs... The head of the mediation department will not be there, because that day he is traveling and busy with something other. This I think really shows unfortunately how important these aspects are at the moment in EAS, we hope that it is saying like a cycle and now there are discussions about the war industry and hopefully once they pass the defense industry to start talking about peace building again, but at the moment it's pretty bleak," he said.
