Russia's deputy envoy to the United Nations in New York, Dmitry Polanski, has responded to US President Donald Trump's threats of new sanctions if Moscow does not reach an agreement to end the war.
Polanski said the Kremlin first needs to see what the agreement Trump is referring to would consist of.
"It is not just a matter of ending the war. It is, above all, a matter of addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis. So we need to see what "deal" means for President Trump. He is not responsible for what the US has done in Ukraine since 2014, making it "anti-Russian" and preparing for war with us, but it is now in his power to stop this malicious policy," he said.
Trump today called on Moscow to reach a deal with Ukraine via the social network Truth Social, saying that "if we don't make a deal and soon, I have no choice but to impose high levels of taxes, tariffs and sanctions."
Recall, the US has already imposed sanctions and embargoes on imports from Russia in several cases, which have been significantly reduced, from $4.3 billion from January to November 2023 to $2.9 billion in the same period in 2024. Metals and artificial fertilizers are particularly prominent among the products imported from the US.During the presidential campaign, Trump promised to stop the war in Ukraine "within 24 hours" and since his inauguration on Monday, the 78-year-old Republican has increased the pressure on his Russian counterpart.
Hours after taking the oath of office, Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wanted to make a deal, but that he didn't know if Putin wanted to do the same.
