Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the main message of the phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump last week was that Russia and the United States now intend to talk about peace, not war.

The two leaders spoke for more than an hour on Wednesday, after which Trump said it was unrealistic to expect Ukraine to become a member of NATO, which Kiev sees as a guarantee of its future security.

According to unofficial information, Trump and Putin agreed that negotiations to end the war should begin "immediately."

Commenting on the conversation, Peskov said in a statement on state television today: "This is a strong signal that we will now try to resolve problems through dialogue. Now we will talk about peace, not war."

Peskov added that Western sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine should not be an obstacle to negotiations, as "they can be lifted as quickly as they were imposed."
