On Tuesday, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis was facing impeachment proceedings in parliament - at the instigation of far-right opposition parties.

"To avoid a crisis for Romania and Romanian citizens, I will resign from my post," President Klaus Iohannis said in a speech in the capital Bucharest. His resignation is expected to take place on Wednesday. Senate President Ilie Bolojan will temporarily take over the role of head of state, DW reports.

After the cancellation of the first round of the presidential election, there was criticism of Iohannis' continued stay in office. In fact, the pro-European politician's second and final term expired on December 21. Iohannis had stated at the time that he wanted to stay in office until his successor was elected.
