Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil celebrated on Saturday a solemn divine service on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Saint Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral.

The divine service took place in the cathedral and was celebrated by Patriarch Daniil, synodal metropolitans and bishops of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as well as representatives of local Orthodox churches.

Among those present were the vice-president Iliana Iotova, the rector of Sofia University Georgi Valchev, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria Julian Revalski, diplomats, representatives of the Board of Trustees of the Church of the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevski and many believers.

The celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the consecration of Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which took place in 1924, began with a festive service on Friday evening.

The cathedral was actually consecrated on September 12, but its celebration takes place on November 23, when it is the winter feast of the temple, Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Church of St. Alexander Nevski and general secretary of Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

The temple was consecrated for the first time in 1924. Since there are three thrones, the consecration took place on three consecutive days, September 12-14, 1924, explained Bishop Gerasim.
