Pope Francis called for a ceasefire on all war fronts in his pre-Christmas prayer today, condemning the brutal bombing of schools and hospitals in Ukraine and Gaza.

"Let the guns fall silent and let the Christmas carols ring. Let us pray that at Christmas there will be a ceasefire on all war fronts, in Ukraine, in the Holy Land, throughout the Middle East and around the world." he said.

Francis recalled the devastated Ukraine, which is still affected by attacks on cities. He also expressed grief over the horrors of the war in Gaza.

The Pope, who turned 88 last week, looked in good shape today after it was announced yesterday that he had a mild cold. On Tuesday he will preside over Christmas celebrations at St. Peter's Basilica.
