The President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani participated in the International Conference on the Elimination of Sexual Violence during the war: Until every woman is free from violence, none of us will be truly free.
Osmani mentioned the war, adding that Kosovo and Colombia may be separated by oceans, but they are connected by a common painful past and are committed to raising their voice for justice, reports KosovaPress.
“We stand united in our efforts to promote the Women, Peace and Security agenda, an agenda we see as central to sustainable peace and security around the world. However, the main reason I stand before you today are the two iron ladies sitting between you, Vasfija and Shyhreti, two of the 20,000 survivors of sexual violence from the last war in Kosovo. Their stories, their pain, their struggle, but most importantly, their courage and resilience should be known to all. While no speech can describe their suffering, I am convinced that our presence here today, our presence together is what keeps them fighting for justice. They don't need our pity", Osmani said.
President Osmani has said that just like the decades-long conflict in Colombia, the last war in Kosovo, although completely different, was a war with deep wounds, especially for the most vulnerable.
She mentioned that sexual violence was used as a weapon of war by the Milosevic regime, causing great suffering to survivors and society in general.
The president added that the choice to use sexual violence as a weapon of war is a deliberate choice.
Osmani mentioned that from April 14, 2022, following the initiative of champions like Feride Rushiti, they decided to declare April 14 as a national day for survivors of sexual violence during the last war in Kosovo.
Osmani said that the fight to prevent sexual violence in the conflict is not the responsibility of Kosovo or Colombia alone. The president said that this should be a global responsibility.
