Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a "historic day" brought about by Israeli strikes against Assad's allies Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

During a visit to the area along the border with Syria, Netanyahu said that for Israel's security, he ordered the army to occupy the buffer zone between the two countries.

"We will not allow any enemy force to take place on the border", said the Prime Minister.

The Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, confirmed that the decision for the entry of the Israeli army into the area under the supervision of the UN was taken to protect the Israeli communities in the Golan Heights.
