NATO reiterates its full support for EU efforts in Kosovo

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Operations Tom Goffus joined Stefano Toma, Commander of Civilian Operations at the European Union's External Action Service, in separate meetings with chief negotiators in Belgrade and Pristina. The meetings took place on the sidelines of the EU-mediated Dialogue organized by the EU's Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and other issues of the Western Balkans, Mr. Miroslav Lajcak.

The Assistant Secretary General for Operations discussed the security situation in Kosovo and addressed security concerns regarding the possible opening to road traffic of the Iber River Bridge in Mitrovica. Goffus emphasized the need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution. He noted that "decisions must be made through dialogue, in timely and effective coordination with the International Community and in order not to endanger the safety of local communities or NATO troops". He added that "the NATO-led KFOR mission is bound by its UN mandate to address any security concerns and ensure a peaceful and secure environment."

According to the announcement, KFOR also maintains its fixed presence on the bridge and continues to carry out regular patrols in the surrounding areas.

"Goffus reiterated NATO's full support for the EU-facilitated dialogue to normalize relations between Belgrade and Pristina. This is the framework to resolve outstanding issues and reach solutions that respect the rights of all communities, which is key to sustainable security in Kosovo and to stability in the entire Western Balkans. KFOR continues to implement its mandate – based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999 – to contribute to a peaceful and safe environment for all people and communities living in Kosovo and freedom of movement, at all times and in an impartial manner.KFOR and the EU Rule of Law mission (EULEX) maintain close coordination , in their respective roles as security responders. NATO has a long-term cooperation with the European Union and will continue to cooperate closely in support of regional stability," the announcement states.
