The historic agreement for economic normalization between Kosovo and Serbia, mediated by the American president-elect, Donald Trump, was discussed at the discussion table by the American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo (OEAK).

The former prime minister of Kosovo, Avdulla Hoti, commenting on the agreements reached between Kosovo and Serbia, said that the position of the then leadership was that the future of the people of Kosovo should be focused on a consultative process with friends and allies.

Deputy Hoti added that the process has now returned to zero point where, according to him, Kosovo is being treated at the international tables of the allies as a security problem in the Balkans.

"I am now afraid that during the last few years we have returned to the zero point where Kosovo is now treated at the international tables of the allies as a security problem in the Balkans. I believe that this does not serve us in any political direction. A new status quo has been built. This means that there is no more dialogue for mutual recognition, an agreement has been reached in Brussels and the Ohrid annex and there is pressure to implement some of the arrangements foreseen in the Ohrid annex... I am convinced that there is no other option but mutual recognition between the two countries but the bad thing is that a new status quo has been built and you know that they create uncertainty that we are experiencing in recent times", Hoti added.

Hoti has hesitated to comment on the policies of American presidents until he believes that the current president will have a more pragmatic approach to the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

Even the executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce, Arian Zeka, said that they are one of the rare organizations that is organizing activities to align the businesses of Kosovo with those of Serbia.

Zeka added that throughout these years they have supported the provisions of the Washington agreement.

The agreement for the normalization of economic relations between Kosovo and Serbia was signed on September 4, 2020 at the White House, in the presence of the then US President Donald Trump.
