The cooperation agreement for prisons is expected to be signed soon between Kosovo and Denmark. After that, there is a two-year deadline for the country's institutions to adapt the Gjilan prison to Danish rules. The Director of the Correctional Service of Kosovo, Ismail Dibrani, declares that 100 prisoners will be accepted at first.

In December 2021, the two states have signed a letter of consent for sending 300 prisoners from the Danish state to the Gjilan prison.

Later, in May 2024, the Assembly of Kosovo ratified the agreement which leases the prison to the Danish state.

The director of prisons in Kosovo says that the signing of the cooperation agreement between the two countries is expected soon.

The treaty, with a duration of 10 years, foresees that Kosovo will benefit about 200 million euros which, among other things, will be destined for the Correctional Service.

Dibrani informs that there have been requests from Belgium and Great Britain for such agreements.

Among other things, in the interview for KosovaPress, he says that this year 15 million euros have been budgeted for capital investments, where the construction of several prisons is also foreseen.

The main challenge for Kosovo's prisons, he says, remains the large number of psychiatric cases and drug users.

In cases of smuggling, Dibrani says that the convicts lose all their privileges and the punishment for these people starts from zero.

Last year, Faton Hajrizi had escaped from Smrekonica prison, where he was then suspected of killing a Serbian policeman and wounding another in Lloznica, Serbia.

A day later, he was killed by Serbian authorities.

The Director of the Correctional Service of Kosovo, Ismail Dibrani, says that the prosecution is dealing with this case.

In the interview for KosovaPress, Dibrani says that during the year 2025, the construction of Prizren prison, the women's prison in Lipjan will begin, as well as the expansion of the capacities of the Institute of Forensic Psychiatry.

In December last year, the Correctional Service of Kosovo was admitted to the European Prison Network - EuroPris. The director of prisons says that Kosovo is the first country that has joined without being a member of the Council of Europe, where according to him, there will be benefits of programs, financing of equipment and numerous visits.
