Neither party had yet reached the threshold for control of the US House of Representatives as of Friday, although both parties were grouped in the quest to secure the necessary 218 seats.
As of Thursday, Democrats have picked up eight seats to Republicans' five, putting their totals at 199 and 211, respectively. Only 25 races remain uncalled.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Thursday night that Democrats still have the opportunity to flip some seats in districts that have yet to be called, saying Democrats still have a "clear path" to control the chamber. .
He specifically pointed to the still-uncalled races in California, Oregon and Arizona, saying there are eight races in total where Democrats hope to flip seats previously held by Republicans.
"Whatever happens with the majority in the next Congress, the Democrats will be no shorter than 212 to 214 votes," he told Spectrum News. "We've been able to withstand that presidential wave that came against us."
Democrats are reeling after President-elect Donald Trump secured a landslide victory over Democratic nominee and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
Republicans secured a substantial majority in the Senate, where they have so far picked up four seats and now hold 53 to 45 Democrats. Only two races remain to be announced. If Republicans are able to secure the House of Representatives, they will have successfully pulled off what is known as the "Red Wave," where they claim control of the White House and the federal legislature. /AA
