US President Donald Trump announced he was imposing tariffs, visa restrictions and other retaliatory measures on Colombia after the government in Bogota refused to accept two flights of migrants.
They include imposing 25 percent tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S., which will increase by 50 percent in a week, a travel ban and visa waivers for Colombian government officials and their allies, full implementation of extraordinary treasury, banking and financial sanctions, and increased border inspections of Colombian citizens.
Trump said the measures were necessary because Colombian President Gustavo Pedro's decision "puts US national security at risk."
"These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of criminals they have forced to go to the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier today, the Colombian president said in X, that his government would not accept flights with migrants deported from the US until the Trump administration creates a protocol to ensure that migrants are treated with dignity.Colombia's refusal to accept the flights is the second case of a Latin American country rejecting deportation flights from the U.S. Colombia's decision follows Mexico's decision last week to reject a request to allow a U.S. military plane carrying migrants to land.
