Vitamins are an effective way to improve the diet, but have you thought about when is the right time to take them.
Dietician Suman Agarwal says there is no specific age to start consuming vitamins.
"Anyone whose vitamin and mineral needs are not met through their regular diet should consult their doctor and consider starting a multivitamin regimen," she told Vogue magazine.
Agarwal explains that multivitamins should contain all B-complex vitamins, as modern living and cooking techniques often deplete these nutrients.
She also suggests that they should contain trace minerals such as zinc, selenium, iron and calcium, along with fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D and E. They may also benefit from antioxidants such as lycopene and astaxanthin.
"Although it is not necessary for multivitamins to contain large amounts of B12 and D3 because they are present in small amounts, it may still be beneficial to include them," says the dietitian.
When is the best time to take a multivitamin?
Vitamin C: After breakfast.
Omega-3: After lunch. Taking Omega-3 with food can improve absorption and reduce side effects such as rubbing or fishy taste.
Iron: It is best absorbed on an empty stomach, at least one hour before meals or two hours after. However, iron can irritate the stomach, so taking it with food may be better for some people.
Complex B: Be sure to consume it in the first half of the day.
Calcium: It is best absorbed through food, especially food rich in vitamin D which helps in the absorption of calcium.
Magnesium: 15 minutes before going to bed, for better sleep and relaxation.
