The Council of Written Media of Kosovo (KMShK) has come out with a position regarding the media reporting of suicide cases, where it is stated that journalists and the media should be careful to avoid sensational reporting, be careful in the use of images and videos, avoid unnecessary details when reporting, as well as quotes or farewell letters from victims.

In the code of ethics of the KMSHK it is stated that the treatment of confessions of personal tragedies should be developed carefully and only when there is high public interest in the matter.

"Journalists must respect people's right to mourn and must report on these topics, showing empathy and restraint. Journalists must respect the suffering of the victims and the feelings of their families. Likewise, journalists and the media should show discretion with photographs and footage, as well as consider the sensitivity of the public during reporting. Suicide is never the result of one factor or event, but of many factors based on psychological problems. The media should be careful to explain these situations. The repetition and continued coverage of such events can serve as a trigger for other cases. The media should be careful not to sensationalize such tragedies. Dramatization and glorification of people who commit suicide should be avoided. The media should keep in mind that suicide is not a rational act, but an act of desperation. Reports of suicide cases should be used to raise awareness of how to save lives. In addition to handling cases sensitively, it is also good to provide information on where to seek help and advice from people who may have problems and, as a result, may undertake the act of suicide. Sensational headlines, language and images should be avoided, as should the publication of details of the act of suicide. At the same time, speculation should be avoided, especially if the case concerns a well-known person. Even public figures have a right to privacy. Lack of professionalism, lack of sensitivity and competition in the media market are factors that influence problematic reporting of suicide cases. Therefore, journalists and media should be careful to: avoid sensational reporting, be careful in the use of images and videos, avoid unnecessary details during reporting, as well as quotes or farewell letters of the victims. The media should not publish photographs of the victims. In certain cases, journalists and the media may choose not to report the suicide, as an understandable solution. They should also take into account not to heroize or romanticize such cases", says the position of the KMSHK.

KMSHK emphasizes that beyond reporting on the act, journalists and the media must protect the privacy of the victims' relatives, while providing information about the organizations that provide assistance, the various help lines and the like.
